Visit Santiago, Chile

The capital city of Chile, Santiago de Chile (typically referred to as simply “Santiago”) is also the country’s most populous urban area. Santiago is a fast growing, modern city with a significant historical past. Santiago is the gateway to Chile for the rest of the world and maintains a busy international airport. Santiago is one of the rare cities in the world providing access where you can literally snow ski in the morning and then be resting on the sand at the beach later the same afternoon, due to its location in the foothills of the Andes mountain range but still close enough to the Pacific Ocean, only 100 km away. The city is the economic engine of Chile and boasts many theaters, restaurants, museums, events and public places. The best view over the city is afforded from Parque Metropolitano, a huge park that is the home of Cerro San Cristobal from which a beautiful panorama is displayed. The main plaza of the city, Plaza de Armas, is also the site of the national Cathedral. A large park that is frequently visited that includes the location of the National Museum of Fine Arts and the Modern Art Museum, Parque Forestal, is situated on the banks of Santiago’s Mapocho River. The Church of San Francisco, erected in 1586, is the oldest surviving structure in the city. Jazz clubs, live music, dance and theatrical performances are staged at various venues around Santiago and the city hosts the annual Festival de Jazz de Providencia on the riverfront. The Chilean Museum of pre-Colombian Art exhibits significant artifacts from ancient South American civilizations. Because of Santiago’s location between the ocean and the mountains visitors to Santiago will find access to many different types of adventures and excursions. Snow skiing, tours of the evolving Chilean wine region, trekking adventures and beach oriented activities are just a few of the offerings. Santiago is a vibrant city with an unmistakable link to the past. Your dream trip to the Andes region might include a visit to this growing, modern city and you can start planning how to fulfill that dream by adding the trip to your list now.
