Waterfront / Harbor Drive, Little Italy, San Diego, California
View Original Description
Turn towards the harbor and just take it in for a moment. Now picture it several blocks closer to where you are standing now. Back when Little Italy was just getting started, the water was much closer and many of the houses and businesses located on India Street were practically beachfront property. But with the building of Harbor Drive, the city dredged the bay and filled it in. Take a look at the photo on your screen. This is Harbor Drive being built in 1913 with water on either side of it. Notice how far inland the water and mudflats reach beyond where Harbor Drive is now.
See that big White building with columns? That was Washington School. Keep in mind how close the waterfront is to Washington in the photo and notice where it is in relation to the water now when you reach the school on your tour.
