Karl Strauss Brewing Company can lay claim to spearheading San Diego’s thriving craft beer industry as the oldest surviving brewery in San Diego County. Beer pioneers Chris Cramer and Matt Rattner originally founded the company in 1989 with the help of Cramer’s late cousin and award-winning master brewer Karl Strauss, who helmed the brewhouse from 1989 to 2006.
From its location just east of Pacific Beach, Karl Strauss’ 22,000-square-foot brewery and tasting room is home to a plethora of full-flavored craft brews like the Red Trolley Ale, Tower 10 IPA and Karl Strauss Amber that are well-known among beer aficionados everywhere. Winning 77 medals and counting from beer competitions like the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup, Karl Strauss’ brews continue to be a strong force to be reckoned with among San Diego’s smaller breakout breweries.
Tasting room hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 2-8 p.m. Hours are subject to change, so call ahead for details. Guided tours of the brewhouse and facility are coming soon!
